GOODMAN GRABS GOLD AT NBF/ADRENALINE MMA

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – You win some, you lose some. Long-time New Jersey amateur promotion New Breed Fighters took the professional mixed martial arts plunge tonight, pairing with Monte Cox’s Adrenaline MMA for a fight card stocked with both local talent and talented out-of-towners.

Heading up the “local talent” portion was Ricardo Almeida-trained Dante Rivera, a jiu-jitsu specialist, veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter Season 7,” and the epitome of hometown hero. But if the crowd was rooting for Rivera, H.I.T. Squad disciple Whisper Goodman had other ideas. With the inaugural NBF middleweight belt up for grabs, Goodman employed strong wrestling and impeccable balance to reverse Rivera’s takedowns and maintain top position. Rivera had two crowd-pleasing slams, but it was otherwise Goodman’s bout, and when time ran out he took the unanimous decision. You win some, you lose some, and on this night Rivera went home with the loss.

In other action, Fight Factory rising star Sam Oropeza put Dave Concepcion to sleep with a high-kick a mere nine seconds into round one, while Oropeza’s teammate Zach Makovsky – a veteran of DEEP and one of the Northeast’s top 135-pound fighters –needed just under two minutes to submit Bo Harris with a triangle choke. And with the NBF welterweight strap at stake, Gracie Barra Boston rep Dennis Olson bloodied up TUF 7 alum Mike Dolce before tapping him out with a guillotine in the third round.

Anderson Silva (23-4) vs. Thales Leites (14-1)
Anderson Silva is the best fighter in the UFC and maybe MMA depending on what Fedor does next. Thales Leites has a great submission game but I donâ€™t see him submitting Silva. Instead, I see Silva smashing Leites to prove the Patrick Cote fight was a fluke.

My Pick: Anderson Silva by first round KO.

Chuck Liddell (21-6) vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (17-3)
Chuck Liddell has lost his last 3 of 4 fights! Liddell has been answering retirement talk all week but I think heâ€™s ready to show that heâ€™s not ready for retirement. Shogun has not lived up to his expectations since coming over to UFC from Pride. Shogunâ€™s cardio has been questioned repeatedly since he defeated Mark Coleman at UFC 93. I donâ€™t see Liddellâ€™s cardio being a problem.

Krzysztof Soszynski (16-8-1) vs. Brian Stann (6-1)
Brian Stann will be making his UFC debut against the former IFL veteran Krzysztof Soszynski. Stann was awarded the Silver Star in Iraq and heâ€™s the former WEC light heavyweight champion. Since Stannâ€™s loss to Cantwell at WEC 35, he has been training with Greg Jacksonâ€™s Team. Soszynski is on a 4 win streak, he has too much experience for Stann.

Cheick Kongo (18-4-1) vs. Antoni Hardonk (8-4)
This is a heavyweight matchup of two dudes that like to bang. Hardonk is on a 3 win streak in the UFC, while Kongo is on a 2 win streak. Both guys have questionable ground games but this fight wonâ€™t go to the ground.

Luis Cane (9-1) vs. Steve Cantwell (7-1)
Cane has looked great devastating in all his fights since coming to the UFC. After winning the WEC belt, Cantwell is looked great in his UFC debut win by breaking Razak Al-Hassan’s armÂ at UFC Fight for the Troops. I think Cane will have too much UFC experience to lose to Cantwell.

PRELIMINARY CARD (un-televised) Vinicius Magalhaes (3-3) vs. Eliot Marshall (6-1)
These guys have competed against each other before in a BJJ match. Magalhaes got the better of Marshall in that matchup. I think Marshall will keep this standing and get the victory.

Xavier Foupa-Pokam (20-8) vs. Denis Kang (31-11-1)
Denis Kang is an experienced Pride veteran who lost his UFC debut to Alan Belcher. Xavier is a hungry up and comer winning 12 of his last 13 fights. I think Xavier will get the UFC jitters and Kang will pick up his first UFC victory.

Jason MacDonald (21-11) vs. Nate Quarry (10-3)
MacDonald has good submission skills but I question his standup game. Quarry suffered his first submission loss of his career against Demian Maia. Maia also submitted MacDonald too! I think Quarry will bounce back with a KO.

Ed Herman (14-6) vs. David Loiseau (18-8)
This is a big fight for both Loiseau and Herman. I want to give the win to Loiseau because I love his crazy elbow strikes. On the other hand, Herman has lost his last two fights, losing to UFC middleweight contenders Demian Maia and Alan Belcher. I think that Herman will spoil The Crowâ€™s Montreal homecoming.

David Bielkheden (13-6) vs. Mark Bocek (6-2)
Bocek has impressed me with his last two fights in the UFC Mac Danzig and Alvin Robinson. Also, Bocek has been training with the guys over at American Top Team. Swedenâ€™s Bielkheden is a well rounded fighter but I think Bocek can neutralize his skills.

Ryo Chonan (16-8) vs. T.J. Grant (13-2)
This is a tough fight to call but a three of Chonanâ€™s UFC fights have gone the distance going 1-2. This will be Grantâ€™s debut in the UFC. I think Grant will defeat the Pride veteran by submission because he has won 12 of 13 by submission.

Sam Stout (13-5-1) vs. Matt Wiman (10-4)
This lightweight matchup should be a good slugfest. Wimanâ€™s won his last 4 out of 5 fights, while Stout has lost 3 in his last 5 fights. I think Wiman will bounce back from his last fight, where he lost a three round decision to Jim Miller.

UFC 97 Picks: What’s REALLY going to happen!!!

Hello MMA fanatics!!!

My name is Curtis and I’ll be your personal guide through this breakdown of UFC 97, which will be on pay-per-view this Saturday, April 17th, 10 pm EST.This card is mildly interesting, I guess.

Personally, I’d watch Anderson Silva fight a grizzly bear at this point, just to see if he is, in fact, human. I’ve only seen Anderson lose once, and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. He was dominating the guy, who then executed some sort of back-flip, spinning, flamingo, scissor, heel-locking, cocoplata, move, catching Anderson, and submitting him. I know he’s lost other fights, but I haven’t seen those, all I can say is, he was either not yet in his prime, or someone had shot him with a tranquilizer prior to the fight (i.e. Patrick Cote). Then again, it may be worth it to lay a few bucks down on Thales Leites, WHY??? You may ask.

A: The odds have to be in the 1,000 – 1 range

B: It IS a fight.

C: Kit Cope predicted an upset.

I am getting a bit tired of having match-ups blown up to make them more desirable. No matter how you stroke it, Thales Leites has NOT earned the chance to get in the Octagon with Silva. His wins are a who’s who of great fighter’s RELATIVES. He has a decision loss to Martin Kampmann. In fact….. His only claim to this title shot is a SPLIT-DECISION win over Nate Marquardt. If you don’t have anyone worthy of competing with the champ, why hype it??? Oh yeah, to sell tickets. Well, I guess I’ll pay $45 to see Anderson Silva DESTROY another man’s soul again. But next time I want to see Cung Le in there, or I’m not watching.

The rest of the card upsets me a bit. First off, I love Chuck Liddell and Shogun Rua, but would I probably choose to masturbate rather than watch this fight? Probably. It’s a good match-up, with absolutely NO significance to the world of mixed martial arts whatsoever. It probably should have happened back in 2005 under the Pride banner, but I guess they saved all of Chuck’s arch-nemesis fights for AFTER he’s lost the belt. Uhhhhh. OK!

Besides the co-headliners, I’m not sure how they decided who would fight on the main card, and who would fight on the under-card. A lot of good fights here; unfortunately, most of the fights I’d like to see are on the under-card. So I got to hope for really short main card fights, so I can see them. Otherwise, it’s me, Sherdog, and my imagination.

Strikeforce Picks: “Shamrock vs. Diaz”

I’m only predicting the fights on the main card for this Strikeforce event:

Brett Rogers (8-0) vs. Ray â€œAbongoâ€ Humphrey (5-0)

This fight features two undefeated fighters who are trying to make their names in the division. Abongo is a new name to most MMA fans, although he was on BETâ€™s â€œIron Ringâ€. Abongo is a standup fighter with grappling experience but seems small (5â€™11â€ and 240lbs) for the division. On the other hand, Brett Rogers (6â€™5â€ and 265 lbs) with his large build belongs in the Heavyweight division. Brett Rogers has more experience with being on the big stage with fighting on CBS. I wonder if Rogers will call out Kimbo after his victory.

Benji Radach (19-4) vs. Scott Smith (14-5)

This is going to be a standup war with 27 TKOâ€™s out of their 33 wins between Scott Smith and Benji Radach. This will be a quick brawl unless one of these guys actually brings strategy to this fight by taking it to the ground. I still question Benji Radachâ€™s chin after getting KOâ€™d by Matt Worwich in the IFL over a year ago.

Hitomi Akano (14-5) vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos (6-1)

This is a showcase fight for Cyborg Santos to show her skills for an upcoming fight between her and Gina Carano. Hitomi Akano does have good grappling game, taking the talented Tara Larosa the distance back in 2006. Cyborg is much bigger of the two, she should easily out strike Akano to a victory.

Gilbert â€œEl Ninoâ€ Melendez (14-2) vs. Rodrigo Damm (8-2)

Rodrigo Damm is replacing Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson after he broke his ankle sparing last week. Damm will be facing former champion Gilbert Melendez in a five round interim Strikeforce Championship fight. Dam has good skills with okay punching power although he did TKO Jorge Masvidal in Sengoku last summer. Gilbert Melendez has gone 1-2 in his last 3 fights after starting his promising career at 13-0. Melendez has something to prove to the MMA community after suffering the 5 round decision loss to Josh Thomson 2 fights ago. Melendez will overwhelm Damm with the ground and pound.

Frank Shamrock (23-9-2) vs. Nick Diaz (18-7)

This is the catch weight (179lbs) matchup that most hardcore MMA fight fans been waiting for since it was announced. This fight is being marketed as Frank â€œThe Legendâ€ Shamrock getting to teach Nick Diaz the Stockton bad boy a lesson. The former UFC legend Shamrock has the better standup striking than Diaz but he does have some baggage with his bad knees. Diaz is a southpaw with peppering punches but his power in his punches has disappeared since defeating Takanori Gomi in 2007.

If Nick Diaz has improved his takedowns, he should be able to do so against Shamrock quite easily. Renzo Gracie had an easy time taking down Shamrock and controlling him in their EliteXC matchup two years ago. Look for Diaz to upset Shamrock by putting him on the ground and wearing him out with submission attempts in an upset.
