Last year was a banner year for women’s MMA. The first-ever main event between women on a major promotion’s card was held, and public awareness rose to an all-time high.

As 2010 begins, women’s MMA continues to develop thanks in no small part to Strikeforce.

Earlier this year the promotion hosted the first title defense of middleweight (145-pound) champion Cris “Cyborg” Santos. Friday night, Strikeforce will hold a fight between Sarah Kaufman and Takayo Hashi to determine its first women’s welterweight (135-pound) champion.

“I think Cris ‘Cyborg’ is a tremendous athlete,” said fighter liaison and member of the Strikeforce matchmaking team Shannon Knapp. “She fights with an aggressive nature and also has the athleticism and the talent.”

According to Knapp, she feels Santos is one of the sport’s elite fighters, regardless of gender or weight, and her sentiment echoes Strikeforce’s view of her.

“Any time you have a champion, they represent you, and Cris represents us very well,” Knapp told MMAWeekly. “She optimizes what a strong, athletic female athlete in this sport is.

“How could you go wrong? She keeps winning, she’s amazing when she’s in there, and I think everyone is very happy that she’s the one who holds the title.”

Knapp went on to discuss the importance of adding a champion in the 135-pound weight class at Friday’s Strikeforce Challengers Series event in San Jose, Calif.

“It’s huge,” exclaimed Knapp. “Especially when you have a female like Sarah Kaufman that’s out there just going through the 135-pound division, you come to a point when you have to say you have to solidify this weight class with a champion.

“I think it’s a great match-up, it will be a competitive fight, and we’re all excited about it.”

When asked what the coming year could possibly hold for the Strikeforce women’s divisions, Knapp feels it could see another series of firsts for the promotion.

“We’re looking for the top female talent and are trying to put on good fights,” she commented. “I wouldn’t be surprised if in the future you saw a fully loaded all-female fight card.

“There’s a lot of talk of, and we haven’t set a date yet, doing different tournaments in the female divisions.”

As women’s MMA continues to move forward, Knapp feels a synergy between herself and Strikeforce when it comes to their continued support and desires for the evolution of it.

“As long as the girls are coming in to fight, I’m all about it,” stated Knapp. “I think that they have a spot in our sport, but there is still a long road to travel to get the type of acceptance females in other sports I feel are just now receiving.

“I think they’ve come a long way from where we were a few years ago. As awareness grows hopefully a lot more girls will be interested, they’ll apply themselves, and it will become deeper and more competitive.”

Ultimately where the women’s divisions go is up to the fans, according to Knapp. It is because of their support that both Strikeforce and their entire roster can continue to do what they do.

“I definitely want to thank everybody for the support they’ve given Strikeforce,” said Knapp in closing. “Without them we don’t have a product.

“We’ve got some great fights coming up this year and I don’t think the fans are going to be disappointed. I think the fans will really appreciate what we’ll put out there.”

Fresh on the heels of the news that Pat Barry and Mirko CroCop are set to do battle at UFC 115, each of their respective opponents will now face off as Gilbert Yvel will face Ben Rothwell in Vancouver in a heavyweight bout.

Gilbert Yvel made his UFC debut in January, but lost by TKO to rising heavyweight fighter, Junior Dos Santos. Before that loss, Yvel had just previously knocked out former UFC fighter, Pedro Rizzo, in devastating fashion.

Suffering travel sickness before UFC 110, Ben Rothwell was forced out of his scheduled bout against Mirko CroCop. The former IFL stand-out was rumored to get another crack at CroCop in the coming months, but the UFC decided to make the switch around of opponents instead.

Rothwell brings a wealth of experience into his UFC career, and hopes to recover after his debut fight didn’t go the way he wanted it to as he was TKO’d by current top 5 ranked heavyweight, Cain Velasquez.

There has been no official announcement from the UFC about the switch or the new bout, and it’s unclear if Yvel and Rothwell will go on the main televised card or the preliminary portion of the broadcast.

It didn’t pack the firepower that most expected, but Sarah Kaufman dominated her way to being crowned the first ever Strikeforce women’s welterweight (135-pound) champion on Friday night at Strikeforce Challengers 6 in San Jose, Calif.

Kaufman established her jab early and kept it going throughout the bout to keep Takayo Hashi at bay. The Canadian bomber dropped her Japanese opponent several times over the course of the bout, but never with the follow up flurry that fans have come to expect out of Kaufman.

“It was really hard to get a lot of clean shots consecutively on her, mostly because she had good movement,” said Kaufman after the fight. “I’m sorry to the fans if it wasn’t as fast-paced as my fights normally are. I just couldn’t do any more than I did.”

Hashi, who said she was going to wait until the later rounds to go for a submission finish, did attempt to get the fight to mat in the later rounds, but Kaufman would have none of it. She continually fended off Hashi’s takedown attempts, following with her relentless jabbing and frequent counter straight right hand.

“I want to finish fights; they’re so exciting with those big finishes,” added Kaufman. “Some people really are just hard to finish.”

Hashi is one of those people, but the unanimous decision easily went to Kaufman, who is now the Strikeforce women’s welterweight champion.

What was shaping up to be an entertaining battle between Trevor Prangley and Karl Amoussou was cut short late in round one. Just as Amoussou was showing his hand speed and Prangley establishing the timing on his powerful punches, Prangley accidently poked Amoussou in the eye. Upon examination, the ringside doctor determined that Amoussou couldn’t immediately continue. Since the fight was stopped due to an injury caused by an accidental foul, the bout was ruled a technical draw.

One of the hottest prospects in the Strikeforce promotion, middleweight Luke Rockhold proved he has a lot more than submissions, though six of his wins have come that way, with his first round victory over Paul Bradley.

Relishing the chance to display his striking, Rockhold did just that, dropping Bradley several times in the bout, the final time via a head kick followed by a knee to the body that had the referee calling a halt to the fight.

“I was surprised. I thought he was gonna come in a little harder for the takedown,” said Rockhold after the fight.

Looking to keep making his way up the ladder of Strikeforce’s most stacked division, he said, “I want to get some tough competition, a well-rounded, big fighter. I’d like to move up.”

Belgian fighter Tarec Saffiedine derailed Cung Le trained James Terry early in the Showtime telecast. Fighting out of Team Quest with Dan Henderson, Saffiedine picked Terry apart with a wide array of strikes, but regularly with an effective jab, throughout their three-round bout. Terry was bleeding freely from a gash under his left eye by the end of the fight, losing a unanimous decision to Saffiedine.

Much like Saffiedine did with Terry, Hawaiian Yancy Medeiros used a superior striking attack to outpoint Raul Castillo over the 15-minute duration of their bout. Castillo shot for the takedown several times, but Medeiros answered nearly all of them with a strong takedown defense then countered with his strong striking attack to score a unanimous decision.

Fans in Canada will soon be able to welcome the best fighters from the featherweight and bantamweight divisions because World Extreme Cagefighting is headed north of the border.

That’s the word from WEC General Manager Reed Harris, who confirmed the promotion would be making its first appearance in Canada in the near future.

“We’re going to go up to Canada, and we’re hoping to do that in the next few months,” Harris said recently on MMAWeekly Radio.

When speaking on the WEC conference call earlier in the week, Harris commented that after their April pay-per-view event they would likely do a show in June, and Canada would be a possibility. He also mentioned when speaking with MMAWeekly Radio that they want to continue to cultivate their relationship with the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, and another show should soon be headed that way as well.

“We’re looking to do another show probably this quarter at the Palms if everything works out, so there’s a lot of different towns we’ve done well in, and as we spread our company and grow our brand, we’ll also attract new markets,” Harris stated.

As far as locations in Canada, Harris couldn’t commit to one area in particular whether on the east or west coast. The UFC has held successful shows in Montreal, and is planning its first event for Vancouver this June. The one major area still on hold is Ontario. The province has not passed legislation yet to legalize mixed martial arts.

Harris believes there are several viable areas in Canada for a WEC event, and they are already working on possible sites and dates.

“We’re looking at a few different cities and it’s really going to depend on dates and venues, and things like that,” Harris said. “Again, we have television concerns and so there’s a lot of elements that go into it. Right now I don’t have a city specifically I can announce, but I can tell you we’re looking at two or three.”

Following the move to Columbus, Ohio, for their next show, the WEC will likely start to line up more events in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more details on the promotion’s move into Canada as they become available.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – You win some, you lose some. Long-time New Jersey amateur promotion New Breed Fighters took the professional mixed martial arts plunge tonight, pairing with Monte Cox’s Adrenaline MMA for a fight card stocked with both local talent and talented out-of-towners.

Heading up the “local talent” portion was Ricardo Almeida-trained Dante Rivera, a jiu-jitsu specialist, veteran of “The Ultimate Fighter Season 7,” and the epitome of hometown hero. But if the crowd was rooting for Rivera, H.I.T. Squad disciple Whisper Goodman had other ideas. With the inaugural NBF middleweight belt up for grabs, Goodman employed strong wrestling and impeccable balance to reverse Rivera’s takedowns and maintain top position. Rivera had two crowd-pleasing slams, but it was otherwise Goodman’s bout, and when time ran out he took the unanimous decision. You win some, you lose some, and on this night Rivera went home with the loss.

In other action, Fight Factory rising star Sam Oropeza put Dave Concepcion to sleep with a high-kick a mere nine seconds into round one, while Oropeza’s teammate Zach Makovsky – a veteran of DEEP and one of the Northeast’s top 135-pound fighters –needed just under two minutes to submit Bo Harris with a triangle choke. And with the NBF welterweight strap at stake, Gracie Barra Boston rep Dennis Olson bloodied up TUF 7 alum Mike Dolce before tapping him out with a guillotine in the third round.

For Luke Rockhold, 2010 looks to be the year that he breaks through into the elite ranks of Strikeforce’s 185-pound division.

Five wins in a row for the promotion has him on the verge of stardom, granted he gets past his opponent on Friday at the Challengers Series event in San Jose, Calif.

“Going into this year I feel like my whole game is coming together,” Rockhold told MMAWeekly. “I feel I’m on the right track. This is a big fight for me to get to that next level. I’m focused and ready for this guy.”

Expectations have always been high for Rockhold, but now more so than ever he’s hearing from followers that it is his time to step up.

“I’ve heard that quite a bit,” he stated. “Everyone’s asking me if this is my last Challengers fight and if I’m ready for the big names and stuff like that.”

People’s expectations aside, Rockhold has never been one to sway his course for outside influences.

“I’m just trying to deal with it,” he said. “I just go to the gym and keep doing what I’m doing and focusing on each individual fight.

“Every fight I’ve had has had a first round finish, so I haven’t had that much experience in the cage, but I feel my whole game is growing huge and I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead.”

Having never been out of the first round in a fight may seem like a detriment to some who feel Rockhold may be better off experiencing a real war of a fight, but he digresses.

“I hate when guys say they’re going in and expecting a war, that’s the worst thing you can have,” exclaimed Rockhold. “I train like crazy – and if it’s going to be a war, I’ll be ready for it – but I train to finish and finish is what I expect to do.

“I study my opponents a lot and I train to beat each one at their game or find their holes and end the fight. More experience is always good, but I’m definitely not looking to have a war.”

Experience won’t be lacking for Rockhold’s opponent, Paul Bradley, who has twice as many fights.

“His takedowns are explosive, he has power, but I just think he’s a little soft on the feet,” stated Rockhold. “I’m going to keep the pace fast, and if it hits the ground I’m going to keep moving and create scrambles and maybe put him on his back.

“For the most part I’d like to keep the fight on my feet. I feel my stand-up is a lot better than his, and I feel I have a lot more ways to beat this guy than he has to beat me.”

With a contract that is soon to expire, it would be understandable if Rockhold is making grand plans for 2010, but according to him, that’s not his nature.

“I don’t really set yearly goals or anything like that, but I’d like to step up eventually here and have a serious well-rounded opponent,” he said. “I’m definitely not trying to force the issue; because there’s definitely a lot of tough guys in the Strikeforce division like (Dan) Henderson and Jacare (Souza), and I need more experience to face those very elite guys.

“I think there’s a lot of guys I can tango with and I’m looking forward to it. I’m just going to build myself as best I can and I’m sure it will happen.”

On the verge of stardom, Rockhold doesn’t intend on changing his ways any time soon, in or out of the cage.

Never one to hold back on his opinion, Frank Mir has proven that getting in your opponent’s head can benefit you when it comes time to fight.

Before his UFC 107 match-up against Cheick Kongo, he quipped about the Frenchman’s lack of ground skills, and a few other barbs, which led to Kongo’s anger heading into the fight in Memphis last December.

Mir reversed the situation on Kongo, dropping him with a big punch early and then putting him away with a guillotine choke on the ground. The former UFC champion admits that maybe it got into Kongo’s head, but in reality he was just answering a question honestly and it shocked some people.

“Honestly it just kind of worked out that way. With Kongo I was being matter of fact about things,” said Mir in an exclusive interview with MMAWeekly Radio. “I said his ground skills aren’t that great, guys, and because the cameras are on, instead of just being like they aren’t that great, they’re not very good, really is it that far fetched to say that they’re probably the worst in the UFC?

“I don’t understand this whole mentality just because it’s true doesn’t mean you have to say it. I’m like, why not? I guess if I said it about someone’s wife or their kids, that’s kind of awful, but I’m saying it about another man who gets to lock himself in a cage with me and if he didn’t like what I said, he gets to punch me in the face and try to fix it.”

Putting the recent controversy about Brock Lesnar behind him, Mir is now 100-percent focused on Shane Carwin and their upcoming interim title fight on March 27 in Newark, N.J. With the fight just a month away is it too soon for Mir to pick at Carwin’s weaknesses?

“In the Shane Carwin fight, honestly it’s not that I’m down playing anything or not trying to get into his head. I’m looking for different angles and honestly to my disadvantage, he doesn’t have a lot of fight time on footage. He stays pretty reserved, and in a lot of ways he’s a likeable guy. He’s a tough competitor. He keeps himself kind of on the straight path. There’s really nothing bad for me to say about him,” Mir commented.

Being honest has put Mir in the crosshairs of the media that scrutinize his words. He says that ultimately he’s just telling it like it is, but he won’t be a guy that will just make up something to stir up controversy.

“At this point, I don’t want to be that fighter that just makes stuff up just to say something cause then it loses a lot of it’s legitimacy,” said Mir. “It’s like you just completely pulled that out of left field. I don’t mind exaggerating something, adding a little color to it to make it enticing for television or radio, but if I constantly just go ‘well Shane Carwin, he has no punching power.’ Well bro, that has no truth whatsoever or what are you talking about Frank?”

The former UFC heavyweight champion will continue his camp in Las Vegas before breaking for two days to head out to Columbus, Ohio, to fulfill his commentary duties with the WEC next weekend. He will then get back to training for the interim title fight.

Yoko Takahashi: In August 1996, Yoko Takahashi became the very first Japanese woman to do a professional MMA bout in the history of sport. Back then Yoko was a pro-wrestler challenging in the MMA, and she came up short on this first fight but she ended up sticking with the “real fight” for all her career and now she is considered as “The Pioneer of the Women’s MMA in Japan.”
One of only two fighters that took current Strikeforce 145 lbs champion Cristian Cyborg, Yoko, made a pro-wrestling debut in 1995 as member of famous All Japan Pro-Wrestling, then moved to another promotion called Jd’ and continued doing both MMA and pro-wrestling, till 2001, but since then she has been focusing on MMA. Yoko also fought in the other discipline, as a part of MMA training, so she is 1-1-1 in pro kick boxing matches and 0-1 in professional boxing match.
And she is the 2005 ADCC Japan trial winner.

Brad Kohler: After five long years, Kohler has decided to come out of retirement. Excited for the opportunity to fight at Target Center, Kohler will square off against Travis Fulton. Kohler and Fulton have a long history as Fulton was Kohler’s very first fight. They had a bare-knuckle war that lasted more than 50 minutes. This was, of course, back in the day before there were time limits and rules in MMA. Kohler went on to fight in the UFC and become a force to be reckoned with. After some health issues and personal difficulties, Kohler will step back into the cage for the first time since 2004. Kohler has said he’s ready and very excited to fight the legendary “Iron Man” once again, and prove he still has what it takes to beat him in the second meeting between these two legends.

Travis Fulton: They don’t call him “The Iron Man” for nothing. With more than 250 recorded fights, Fulton has become a legend in the MMA community. His first recorded fight came back in 1997 against the famed Dave Strasser. Since then, Fulton hasn’t slowed down a bit. He has fought in the UFC, Hook N Shoot, Pancrase, Vale Tudo, King of the Cage, the very first WEC and Rage in the Cage. He holds wins over guys like Joe Riggs and Wes Sims. The list of names on Fulton’s resume is a virtual who’s who in the fight world today. Fulton is ready to come up to Minneapolis and avenge his loss to Kohler back in 1997.
